Japanese popular culture influences them to study Japanese, but is not their main reason for studying the language. This investigation finds that university JFL students do indeed interact with Japanese popular culture in a significant way. The Textbook Evaluation Questionnaire has seven participants evaluate four Japanese language textbooks that use Japanese manga comics as the teaching medium. The Student Survey Questionnaire asks 164 university JFL student participants about Japanese popular culture that they enjoy and how they acquire Japanese language through Japanese popular culture. The investigation features two parts: a quantitative Student Survey Questionnaire and a qualitative Textbook Evaluation Questionnaire. This thesis investigates what kind of relationship university JFL students have with Japanese popular culture. Japanese popular culture, such as anime, manga, and video games, influences Japanese-as-a-Foreign-Language (JFL) students to study Japanese and is a major channel for interacting with Japanese language and culture. The study will provide useful information to the teachers, education stakeholders and researchers on education technology that will help in understanding the emerging issues in Kenya as a result of growth in technology. The study also tries to determine the relationship between the level of Internet usage at a secondary school level in relation to their social and economic status. This survey therefore aims to investigate the Internet usage by children aged between 13-17 years in Urban and per-urban secondary schools in Kenya and draw comparisons with Urban schools in Japan. A comparative analysis on Internet access on adolescent students in Kenya and Japan was done. This could be attributed to intense promotions especially the use of social sites such as the face book and twitter and consequently their popularity among the youth. It further indicates that Internet usage has continued to rise with the mobile handset being the most popular medium of access. The Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK, 2011) statistical report, indicate that there has been an increase in the number of people connecting to Internet over the last 2 years. Internet use in Kenya rose by 65 % to 14.3 million in the third quarter of 2011.
